Spiritual Gifts

Spiritual Gifts! How many people have struggled with this one? How do you know if you have a gift? Or, are they given to “special” people? What are spiritual gifts and how do you determine what yours is?

You’ve probably remember a family member saying to you, everyone has a gift, you’ve just got to find it. But it’s not always that simple. Sometimes people feel that the gift possessed by some wasn’t given by God, instead,  it may be viewed as the work of Satan. So I thought this would be a great topic to talk about.

1 Corinthians 14:1 says; Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.

1 Corinthians 14:3-5 says; But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I would like everyone of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6 says; There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same GOD works all of them in all men.

1 Corinthians 12:8-11 says; To one there is given through the Spirit the message of Wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by the means of the same spirit, to another faith by the same spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.

Romans 12:6-8 says; We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach. If it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

1 Timothy 4:14 says; Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.

So what have we learned so far? Right, everyone has a gift and this gift was given by the Spirit. Our gift can be anything from leading, teaching, encouraging, serving, the gift of healing, speaking in tongues, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits and the list goes on and on.

But how do you know what your gifts are? To help you better understand, take a pen and paper and write down what you enjoy doing. Or, write down what seems to come NATURAL to you.  And don’t limit yourself, you could have more than one gift!

There are some Gifts that are very apparent. Such as singing, playing music, a good listener and so forth. But, the areas such as;  speaking in tongues, the gift of healing, miraculous powers, prophecy and distinguishing between spirits seem to be less acceptable. The bible is very clear on this matter, it is a GIFT. But, it must be used in accordance to your faith.

So the next time someone thinks your weird or odd because your GIFT doesn’t fit into the “traditional” area of spiritual gifts; don’t worry about it. Just smile and say, I was BLESSED with a unique GIFT!

But remember, always USE YOUR GIFT in accordance with God’s word!

And don’t let me or anyone else sway your thinking! Read each of the verses for yourself and make up your own mind.

NOTE: For further reading, check out 1 Corinthians chpt 12, 13 and 14. All the verses was taken from the NIV Holy Bible and was compared to the KJV. Each are very, very similar!
